COVINGTON Sunday's Easter celebration at St. Mary's Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption was mixed with nostalgia as parishioners bade farewell to their church for eight months.
A $4.7 million renovation of the 100-year-old basilica begins today. Work is to be completed by Dec. 8, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.
When parishioners return, the altar will be closer to the people, kneelers will be installed and windows will sparkle.
When it's finished, it's going to be a beautiful place not that it isn't right now, said Ron Otto, a church member and former parish councilman.
Those who opposed the renovation were mainly upset about moving the altar. The interior is being brought into compliance with Vatican II, said Mr. Otto, 44, of Villa Hills.
His wife, Susan, 43, hopes the church doesn't lose any seating capacity. This is the place people come for Christmas and Easter.
Covington Bishop Robert Muench celebrated Easter Mass before an overflowing crowd of more than 1,000.
Vickie Rigg, 43, of Independence, wanted her 14-year-old daughter to see the basilica before renovation. Ms. Rigg is an art teacher who brings her students to the church.
It's such a beautiful architectural building and a work of art, she said. Churchgoers with cameras and video recorders lingered to preserve history.
Geraldine Herman, 70, of Villa Hills, snapped a photo before leaving.
Like other parishioners, she'll attend St. John's Catholic Church in Covington during the renovation.
