Holocaust awareness events

By Ben L. Kaufman
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Holocaust Awareness Weeks begin today in the Tristate, offering lectures, workshops, films and exhibits.

While not ignoring the 6 million Jews murdered by the Germans and their collaborators before and during World War II, this year's commemoration embraces the theme, “Life After The Holocaust.”

A service will be 11:10 a.m. Thursday in the Hebrew Union College chapel, 3101 Clifton Ave., University Heights.

Communal commemorations will be 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Rockdale Temple, 8501 Ridge Road, Amberley Village, and 2:30 p.m. April 29 at Florence Christian Church, 300 Main St., Florence.

        Other events include:

        • Emory University scholar Deborah Lipstadt speaks 7:30 p.m. today about her successful defense in a libel suit brought by Holocaust-denier David Irving. Her talk will be in Blair Hall Theater, Sinclair Community College, 444 W. Third St., Dayton, Ohio.

        • National Book Award winner James Carroll will talk about his study, Constantine's Sword: The Church and the Jews, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Xavier University's Cintas Center.

        • Racelle R. Weiman, di rector of HUC's Center for Holocaust and Humanity Education, will speak on the post-Holocaust renewal of faith at a Sabbath service at 8 p.m. Friday at Northern Hills Synagogue, 715 Fleming Road, Springfield Township.

        • Former Cincinnatians Jean and Abe Peck will discuss Mrs. Peck's book, At The Fire's Center: A Story of Love and Holocaust Survival, at 10 a.m. April 22 at Wise Temple, 8329 Ridge Road, Amberley Village.

A full schedule is available from HUC's Center for Holocaust and Humanity Education, which organized the two-week program: (513) 221-1875 ext. 355.
