District chief to retire

By Jennifer Mrozowski
The Cincinnati Enquirer

FAIRFIELD TWP. — The superintendent of the Butler County Joint Vocational School District announced his retirement Tuesday.

Joseph L. Lupo, 55, has headed the district since 1996. The district serves more than 4,400 youth and adults daily through the D. Russel Lee Career-Technology Center and more than 70 satellite programs at nine school districts in Butler County,

His position there caps 35 years as an educator. Mr. Lupo will retire Dec. 31.

Mr. Lupo said the joint vocational district board of education hopes to hire a new superintendent by August, allowing a transition period for the new and former superintendent.

“I would say it should be a good transition in terms of imparting the knowledge and insight I have that's not in black and white on paper,” he said.

During his tenure at the joint vocational district, Mr. Lupo has overseen three major renovation projects and the construction of a 58,000-square-foot addition to D. Russel Lee Career-Technology Center.

He directed implementation of six new high school programs, oversaw the launch of a district Web site and directed the implementation and expansion of a work force development center.

Previously, Mr. Lupo, a native of Ashtabula, served for 10 years as superintendent for the Mid-East Ohio Vocational School District in Zanesville. Mr. Lupo said he has some opportunities for employment after his retirement but had not decided.
