Race commission needs 'a big stick'

Mayor wants quick answers, resolutions

By Kevin Aldridge

By week's end, Mayor Charlie Luken will share more details about his newly formed race-relations commission.

Its leaders will serve on committees that will study such problems as housing, education and employment.

How the commission will operate has not yet been determined, said Brendon Cull, the mayor's community and legislative liaison.

The mayor announced his commission Monday, charging it with examining what caused last week's violence and the racial tension that exists in Cincinnati.

The group, Mr. Luken said, will include religious, education, business and community leaders.

Unlike similar past commissions, this one will work with City Council to implement its recommendations quickly, Mr. Luken said.

Norma Holt-Davis, president of the Cincinnati NAACP, said she supports the commission.

“We are looking to make sure that the people who are appointed to be on this commission have the type of reputation that will carry a big stick with them,” she said. “It is our hope (the commission) will not be another where there is a report produced that sits around with layers of dust on it.”
