What's the Buzz?

Ford, Toyota race to save the planet

What would you do with 200 tons of cardboard, 260 tons of wood pallets, 4,500 tons of aluminum and 27,000 tons of scrap iron?

If you work at Ford Motor Co.'s Sharonville transmission plant, that's the amount of material recycled last year. The figures were included in the automaker's annual environmental report for Saturday's Earth Day.

Ford said recycling at its North American plants saved 1.5 million trees, 3.5 billion kilowatt hours of electricity, 430,000 cubic yards of landfill space, 37 million gallons of oil, 1.8 million gallons of gasoline and 533 million gallons of water.

Not to be outdone, Toyota Motor Manufacturing North America in Erlanger released a report on its plants, noting they save more than 111 tons of engine coolant annually by reusing it, and recycled 2,628 tons of wood annually.

Through 2005, Toyota said it aims to reduce energy use at its North American plants by 15 percent, reduce auto-painting emissions, reduce hazardous-waste disposal in landfills by 95 percent and reduce water use by 15 percent.
