MIDDLETOWN Police and child-protection workers are continuing to investigate the death of a 2-year-old boy who will be buried today.
Christopher David Long died at Children's Hospital Medical Center Tuesday after he stopped breathing at his Middletown home Monday.
The Hamilton County Coroner's Office and Middletown police Thursday were not saying what might have caused the boy's death, which has been labeled suspicious.
Middletown Police Maj. Mike Bruck said the child's mother, Candy L. Long, was at work at the time the child apparently was injured.
The Butler County Children Services Board had been investigating previous reports of possible neglect at Christopher's home, but there was no indication of abuse, said Bob Walker, spokesman for Children Services. A caseworker, who had been trying to reach Ms. Long, left the home a few minutes before a baby sitter called 911 to report Christopher was having trouble breathing.
Ms. Long's other three children are staying at a relative's home.
Besides his mother and siblings, Christopher is survived by his father, Casey D. Barnes of London, Ky.; grandparents Teresa and Joseph Long of Middletown and Deborah and Ronald Barnes in Port Richey, Fla..
Visitation for Christopher will be 11 a.m. today at Herr-Riggs Funeral Home, 210 S. Main St., Middletown. The service follows at 12:30 p.m. Burial will be in Woodside Cemetery in Middletown.
