Police advisers' plea: No more studies
By Kristina Goetz
The Cincinnati Enquirer
A committee charged with reviewing police training and recruiting recommended Thursday night that the city not assemble any more groups to study the police division's actions.
There are plenty of groups already, said Barbara Glueck, chairwoman of the Citizens Police Advisory Committee.
Committee members, who serve as an advisory group to City Manager John Shirey, met in closed session for two hours to discuss the recent police shooting of Timothy Thomas and the civil unrest that followed last week.
At times members could be heard yelling from outside the door. Ms. Glueck said people were sharing their personal experiences and the occasions that racism pained them deeply.
The group outlined specific training issues that members want addressed such as how to avoid stereotyping.
Mr. Shirey came late to the meeting but said it was productive.
Mr. Shirey announced the first appointments to the committee in 1996 after an incident involving police and Pharon Crosby, a teen whose 1995 arrest was televised and ignited charges against police of racism and brutality.
The committee is made up of ministers, average citizens and community activists. The group is responsible for reviewing training and recruiting procedures, as well as participating in the review of candidates being considered for police recruits.
