ABERDEEN, Ohio Four Mississippi residents are expected to face felony drug charges after police found what they say was a methamphetamine lab in an Aberdeen hotel room.
Arrested were Shannon Cochran, 25, and his wife, Racheal Cochran, 22; Mark A. Stewart, 23; and Nichole Barber, 21. Police say they expect to file felony charges of manufacturing and possessing methamphetamine against them today.
There could also be child endangering charges filed because the Cochrans' 2-year-old daughter was with them in the hotel.
The baby has tested positive for methamphetamine, Aberdeen Police Chief Joe Sprague said.
The adults are being held in the Brown County Detention Center and the child is in the custody of Brown County Children's Services.
Police say they made the arrests at the Daniel Boone Motor Inn on U.S. 52 early Monday after receiving a complaint about a strong odor coming from a hotel room.
I pretty much knew after I smelled it that we had a meth lab, Aberdeen Officer Todd Bumbalough said. The odor was tremendous. I think we kind of caught them off-guard.
The chief said officers obtained search warrants for the hotel rooms and the suspects' pickup truck and car.
It appears that we got a quantity of equipment ... used in the illegal manufacture of methamphetamine, Chief Sprague said. We recovered a quantity of methamphetamine from the room, from the vehicles and from the (suspects).
Authorities were still weighing the methamphetamine, and could not comment on how much was recovered.
No weapons were found and there were no injuries, Officer Bumbalough said. Police evacuat ed the hotel and closed its restaurant as a precaution.
The suspects had been staying at the hotel for about a month, but authorities do not know how long the drug may have been manufactured.
In the hotel parking lot, police guarded dozens of items taken from the hotel rooms including fans, several propane tanks and small torches.
This is becoming scaringly prevalent in the area, Chief Sprague said. I think it's a growing thing, especially out here in the rural areas. I do think we're going to see more of this.
