Norwood policeman indicted

A Norwood police lieutenant was indicted Monday on a felony charge that accuses him of intercepting and releasing confidential information that compromised an undercover drug investigation.
Lt. Steve Daniels, who had been on administrative leave while the department conducted an internal investigation, was suspended with pay Monday and his police powers were taken away, said Norwood Capt. Mike Wheeler.
A Hamilton County grand jury indicted Lt. Daniels on a felony obstructing official business charge. If convic ted, he faces up to one year in prison.
He will be arraigned in Common Pleas Court in a week to 10 days, when his bond and trial date will be set.
Cincinnati attorney Peter Rosenwald, who is representing Lt. Daniels, said the 22-year Norwood police veteran is not guilty of any wrongdoing. We don't believe he has committed any crime, regardless of what he might have done, Mr. Rosenwald said.
County Prosecutor Michael Allen said Lt. Daniels intercepted a fax transmission that contained very sensitive and confidential information intended for the Norwood drug task force.
Investigators said the indictment alleges that Lt. Daniels copied and shared the fax with his son, which jeopardized a major drug investigation involving Fairfield police, the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, and several suspects and informants. It also put at risk the safety and confidentiality of the parties involved, in vestigators said.
Lt. Daniels was in charge of the second shift, Mr. Allen said, when the fax was inadvertently sent to the patrol unit fax number Feb. 6. The prosecutor said Lt. Daniels made a copy of the fax and took it home.
Lt. Daniels was promoted from sergeant earlier this year.
