Teens accused of taking police gun
Pair charged after event at academy

Two teen-agers attending a student-police event designed to teach them greater respect for the law used the occasion to steal a gun from Cincinnati police, according to police.
Police said the theft by two boys of an unloaded gun from a storage area of the Police Academy at Longworth Hall occurred Tuesday, but officials at their school, Bramble Academy, did not know about it until Wednesday.
According to police, the theft occurred while about 35 Bramble seventh- and eighth-graders were being served refreshments after a graduation ceremony for those attending the Student Police Academy.
The boys, ages 14 and 15, maneuvered themselves into a position to take a firearm from a storage area in the physical training room of the Police Academy, police said in a statement released Friday.
According to police, the boys, who are not being identified because they are juveniles, both shared possession of the firearm and one of them placed the firearm in his pocket as they both left with other Bramble students.
The unloaded, .22-caliber revolver was never taken inside Bramble because the students returned from the field trip Tuesday afternoon after classes had ended. One of the boys took the gun home, police said.
Cincinnati Public Schools spokeswoman Jan Leslie said the boys then apparently showed the gun to other teen-agers, some of whom reported the theft Wednesday to Bramble officials, who immediately notified police.
The two boys were arrested and have been charged with theft and inducing panic. They are in custody at the Hamilton County Juvenile Court Center.
