COVINGTON — A Holmes High School junior has won a national essay contest. Her work was chosen from among 1,176 high school entries.

Stephanie Dziczek, 17, won the Profile in Courage Essay Contest, sponsored by the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston. Stephanie wrote about Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, a strong advocate of gay rights. She will receive $3,000 and a trip to Boston to accept the award.

Stephanie, along with Holmes classmate Tiffany Donnelly, was among 10 finalists whose essays were judged last week in New York City.

The contest began in 1994 in the Northeast, expanding nationwide in 1999.

Top students to be recognized

The Enquirer would like to honor the Tristate's top students in the Class of 2001 by publishing the names and photographs of each high school's valedictorians and salutatorians.

For schools that recognize top students in another way, we'd like to honor them as well by including their names and pictures in our round-up.

Our list will include students from Northern Kentucky's public and private high schools.

To do that, we need your help. We plan to publish the list in June. Please send the names and photographs of your valedictorians, salutatorians or other top students to Lori Hayes, Kentucky Enquirer, 226 Grandview Drive, Fort Mitchell, Ky. 41017, as soon as they have been identified. You can also e-mail the information to lhayes@enquirer.com. For information, call Lori at 578-5577 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., weekdays.
