COVINGTON - The alternative program for Covington Independent Schools is getting a new home.

        The school board voted Monday to move the Covington Academy for Renewal Education, or CARE, to the old YMCA building on Madison Avenue.

        CARE serves 130 elementary, middle and high school students with behavioral, emotional or academic troubles. The board approved a one-year, $120,000 contract with the building's owner, David Herriman, to lease 13,000 square feet in the basement. The new facility will be renovated this summer.

        “This is the best option we have,” said Superintendent Jack Moreland, who has been searching for a site to relocate the program.

        CARE is now at Fourth District Elementary on Scott Street. The board closed the elementary school in 1998 because of declining enrollment. However, the district plans to reopen the school as part of a redistricting plan that will reduce enrollment and shift students at all of its elementary schools to make them more manageable.

        Two public hearings to present the redistricting plans to parents have been rescheduled for mid-May.

        Mr. Moreland wants to revamp the CARE program and reduce its size from 130 students to about 80 students.

        “It has lost its focus,” he said. “We are going to be looking individually at every student in the CARE program.”

        District officials will be revising the way students are assigned to CARE and how they move back to their regular schools.

        No staff members will lose their jobs; however, some may be reassigned, Mr. Moreland said.
