What's the Buzz?

Cell-phone drivers often just gabbing

Next time someone cuts you off while driving with a cell phone, it's not likely they're rushing to close on that big multibillion-dollar business deal.

In fact, while 50 percent of cell-phone users on the road are driving to and from work, 78 percent of them are talking with friends and family members — not co-workers or the boss. And be on your guard: 46 percent of those drivers have swerved into another lane while driving and gabbing on cellular.

That's all according to a new survey by Progressive Insurance. It's no wonder that driving while using a cellular phone increases the risk of automobile accidents by four times, according to a recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine. Some other tidbits about drivers and cell phones, according to Progressive:

        • 23 percent have tailgated another car.

        • 21 percent have cut someone off.

        • 18 percent have almost hit another car.

        • 69 percent use cell phones while driving on highways.

        • 26 percent of people who make $50,000 to $75,000 use their cell phones most often while driving alone.
