Covington businesses, leaders win awards

COVINGTON — Jillian's was named Outstanding New Business of the Year in awards announced at the Covington Business Council's (CBC) annual dinner.

The interactive entertainment and dining complex in the former Bavarian Brewery building is a successful contributor to the city's economic development efforts, the CBC said.

Anthony N. Durso received the Michael Partin Community Service Award. Mr. Durso has been active in a number of organizations, including the Kenton County Public Library, the Baker-Hunt Foundation, the Northern Kentucky Heritage League and the Friends of Covington.

Gretchen R. Theissen won the Ralph V. Haile Jr. Outstanding Achievement Award. The Covington resident has been a member of the CBC's board of directors since 1993 and has taken an active role in a number of the group's endeavors.

St. Elizabeth adds mammogram backup

EDGEWOOD — St. Elizabeth Medical Center is the first Tristate hospital to install a new computer-aided system to help radiologists detect breast cancer from screening mammograms.

The Image Checker from R2 Technology identifies areas on a mammogram that warrant review.

“The new ImageChecker System will help us be better able to detect breast cancer early, when it's most treatable,” said Dr. Jackie Sweeney, a St. Elizabeth radiologist.

Mammograms taken at St. Elizabeth South radiology, the St. Elizabeth Women's Wellness Center and the Esther Marie Hatton Mobile Mammography Van will be the first to be read using the ImageChecker system, with Covington and Grant County added soon.

For information, or to schedule a mammogram, call the St. Elizabeth Women's Wellness Center at (859) 344-3939.

Wilkinson registers to vote in Florida

LEXINGTON — Former Gov. Wallace Wilkinson, who has made news this year with his personal bankruptcy and that of his bookstore company, has registered to vote in Florida.

The move has raised the possibility that he could try to use Florida's liberal bankruptcy laws to protect his assets, including a $1.9 million home near Naples that Mr. Wilkinson and his wife have owned since 1992.

Robert Brown, Mr. Wilkinson's lawyer, said his client still claims Kentucky as his place of residence and has no plan to claim residency in Florida in trying to protect his home there or other assets.

“There is no intention whatsoever of doing that,” Mr. Brown said before pausing. “At this time.”

Mr. Wilkinson registered to vote in Collier County, Fla., on April 13. He was stricken from the voter rolls in Lexington on Tuesday after the Fayette County clerk's office was notified.
