All Sports trophy up for grabs at GGCL track meet
League track meets are usually poorly attended, but the Girls Greater Cincinnati League meet Monday and Tuesday at Oak Hills could be an exciting and competitive event for Mount Notre Dame, Ursuline and McAuley.
We've never won the GGCL's All Sports trophy, MND athletic director Mark Schenkel said. If we win the league track meet, it will give us the trophy for the first time.
The GGCL awards an All Sports trophy to the school that compiles the best overall performance in all sports in both the Scarlet and Gray divisions.
Going into the final event of the school year, Mount Notre Dame has amassed 22 1/2 points, Ursuline 22, McAuley 20 1/2 and Seton 19 1/2 in the Scarlet.
Since 1991, Ursuline has won the All Sports award nine times.
But three-time defending GGCL track champion Mount Notre Dame is the slight favorite this year.
Six schools compete in the Scarlet Division. Depending on the sport, the winning team at a league meet or the top team through conference play
earns five points; second place earns four, third gets three, etc. The team that finishes last doesn't receive a point.
The Mount Notre Dame track team is strong in the sprints and relays, as well as the high jump.
If Mount Notre Dame wins, it will be the school's only league championship of the 2000-01 season, although the volleyball team won a third consecutive Division I state championship.
