Xavier, NKU set for NCAA golf tournaments

Xavier University and Northern Kentucky University men's golf teams are preparing for NCAA Tournament regionals in Division I and Division II.
XU won the Atlantic 10 Championship for the second time in four years April 20-22 at Penn National Golf Club in Fayetteville, Pa., shooting a 23-under-par 841, to earn its first NCAA Tournament berth in program history. Regionals are May 17-19. Senior Tim Donovan (St. Xavier) was medalist with a 19-under-par 197 (67-64-66) for 54 holes, an A-10 championship record. Donovan, Golf World national player of the week, senior Jeff Marr and Matt Makinson made all-conference. Makinson was named A-10 Rookie of the Year. Doug Steiner was named A-10 Coach of the Year. NKU will compete at the Division II North Regional Monday through Wednesday at the New England Country Club in Bellingham, Mass.
The Norse, who captured their first Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship, are making their second straight trip to the Division II Tournament. NKU also made back-to-back NCAA appearances in 1995 and 1996, finishing 11th at the 1995 nationals.
Junior Steve Landrum (Grant County), GLVC Player of the Year after winning the medal at the GLVC Championship, leads NKU. Freshman Brandon Brown was medalist at the District IV tournament. NKU's Daryl Landrum was named GLVC Coach of the Year.
