Police kill tenant mistaken for burglar
The Associated Press
INDIANAPOLIS Police shot and killed a man in his own apartment early Saturday after neighbors mistook him for a burglar.
John Leaf, a 35-year-old stockbroker, was shot after he lunged at deputies with a hunting knife when they surprised him in his bed while looking for a burglar, according to the Marion County Sheriff's Department.
A neighbor who called 911 after seeing someone breaking into Mr. Leaf's apartment told deputies he had confronted the man and did not recognize him.
Police think Mr. Leaf broke into his own apartment because he had been out drinking and had given his keys to a friend.
When Deputy Ronald Shelnut and Special Deputy Andrew Jacobs checked the dark apartment, they apparently startled Mr. Leaf, who grabbed the knife and lunged at Deputy Shelnut, Maj. Mike Turk said.
He said Deputy Shelnut backed up, shouting, Sheriff's Department! Drop the knife! but Mr. Leaf did not comply.
Deputy Shelnut shot Mr. Leaf three times. Mr. Leaf was pronounced dead at the scene.
