Cincinnati Country Day defeated Miami Valley Conference rival Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy 10-2 Thursday its third straight win over the Eagles to take the Division IV sectional championship at Tealtown.
The Indians started the scoring in the first inning. Pitcher Brett Smith singled with two outs and scored two batters later on a single by Joel Ellison.
Smith didn't allow any runs or hits in his first three innings on the mound.
Coach (Tim Dunn) told me last week I would start today, Smith said. After Ellison singled and I scored, I knew we would win.
The Indians put away the game in the fourth and fifth innings when they scored seven runs to push the lead to 9-0. In the fourth inning, sophomore Asif Shah doubled to drive in Smith and Brad Keiser.
In the fifth inning, the Indians scored three runs with a sacrifice fly by Roman Duty, an RBI double by Smith and an RBI double by Shah.
For the game, Smith was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI and pitched six innings.
It's tough to beat a team three times, Dunn said. This is the first time we have thrown Brett against them, and I thought it would give them some problems.
CHCA looked overmatched at the plate. The Eagles didn't get their first hit until the fifth inning when Drew Hood singled up the middle.
We have had great pitching all year long, Dunn said. We are five deep in our rotation, and that has been the difference for us this season.
Shah came on in relief in the seventh inning. He struck out all three batters he faced.
CCD advances to play the Newton/Tipp City Bethel winner in the district championship Wednesday at Covington High School.
Badin 11, Springboro 0, Division II at Monroe Matt Brady and Matt Wolpert combined to drive in 10 runs. Andy Rumpler pitched four innings to improve to 7-0.
Summit 28, Fayetteville 20, Division IV at Tealtown The Silver Knights roughed up Fayetteville ace Sonny Meyer for 13 runs. Junior Steve Johnson led Summit with two home runs in the third inning.
