What's the Buzz?
Company looking for its history
If you know anything about Draper & Maynard Co., an early 20th century maker of baseball gloves and other sports equipment, give Patrick Mahaffey a call.
Mr. Mahaffey is international sales manager for Hygenic Corp., an Akron supplier to D&M Draper Co. Ltd. in Japan. D&M Draper was formed 100 years ago as a representative of Draper & Maynard in Japan. The two companies lost contact during World War II and Draper & Maynard was eventually acquired by MacGregor/Brunswick Corp.
But D&M Draper prospered after the war as a manufacturer of athletic braces and exercise equipment. To mark its centennial, the company is trying to reconnect with its roots.
The Cincinnati Historical Society says city directories from 1942 to 1962 list a Draper-Maynard Sporting Goods Co. on York Street and later on Spring Grove Avenue but not much else.
H. Hatano, chairman of D&M Draper Co. and descendant of the founder, is planning to visit Cincinnati this month to research the company's history. If you have information, contact Mr. Mahaffey at (800) 321-2135.
