Police officer guards Luken
By Robert Anglen
The Cincinnati Enquirer
A police officer was assigned Friday to guard Mayor Charlie Luken after an apparent burglary attempt at the mayor's residence this week.
Although Mr. Luken said he did not want the extra security, Police Chief Tom Streicher overruled him.
I'm just not comfortable with him being by himself all of the time, the chief said.
While Mr. Luken would not comment on the incident at his West End townhouse on Wednesday, police reports show that at least nine police officers responded.
Mr. Luken called police about 9:30 p.m., saying his alarm had just gone off and he believed someone might be in his house, according to dispatch logs.
Officers found nothing, but about an hour later the mayor called back and reported that he'd just found the sliding glass door to his second-floor deck open.
On Thursday, two officers spent nearly two hours at City Hall investigating the incident. After talking to the mayor at length, one of the officers said they were conducting an ongoing investigation, but would not provide details.
