Sectional baseball highlights


High drama for No. 1 St. X, No. 3 Hamilton

        Darkness forced the Division I sectional baseball championship game between No.1-ranked St.Xavier and No.3 Hamilton to be suspended after six innings with the scored tied 8-8.

        The game will be completed at 11a.m. today at Fairfield Junior High with Hamilton coming to bat in the seventh inning.

        “I'd say we have the advantage, because we're the home team,” St.X assistant coach Don DiGiacomo said. “Our strength is pitching depth, and we can come back with any of five pitchers.”

        Hamilton coach Dan Bowling said ace right-hander Steve Polen will be on the mound for the Big Blue.

        Hamilton blew a 6-1 lead in the third and trailed 7-6 in the sixth when Nate Mahon hit a hanging curveball over the left-field fence for a two-run home run and an 8-7 lead.

        St.X senior Pat LeMas ters countered with an opposite-field home run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game.

        • Elder 7, Milford 6, Division I sectional at Midland — Brett Bolger singled in Richie Jones in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Panthers the championship.

        Jones led off the ninth inning with a single and advanced to second on a balk.

        Elder squandered a 6-2 lead in the top of the seventh. The Eagles got four runs thanks to two Elder errors and an RBI single by Kyle Rapp.

        Elder will face the winner of Centerville/Northmont in the district championship game 5:30p.m. next Friday at Midland.

        Lakota West 6, Fairmont 0, Division I sectional at Lakota West — Senior Austin Rhoads, Lakota West's ace, threw a three-hit shutout while striking out eight to lead the Firebirds to their third straight sectional crown.

        Lakota West plays the Springfield North/Dayton Wayne winner at 4p.m. Thursday at Midland.

Suspended games

        • Ross and McNicholas came within three outs of completing their Division II sectional championship game. The Rams hold a 9-3 edge with McNicholas batting in the bottom of the seventh. The game will resume at 4:30p.m. Monday at Roselawn.

        • The Division III sectional championship games at Tealtown both were suspended in the fourth inning because of the weather.

        Batavia leads Madeira 6-4 in the bottom of the fourth. Mariemont leads Deer Park 9-3 in the top of the fourth.

        Both games will continue at 4 p.m. Monday at Tealtown.
