Madeira knocks out Williamsburg

        — Madeira downed Williamsburg 9-2 in a Division III sectional championship game at Riverstar. The Amazons (13-7) captured their first sectional title since switching to fast-pitch in 1996.

“We really struggled last year and we lost three of our best players to graduation. We weren't sure what to expect, because we have no seniors and only three juniors on the team,” coach Dave Schlensker said. “I joked with the girls after the win today that this wasn't bad for a JV team.”

Sophomore Nikki Barnhill singled in Natalie Mender and Lizzy Frabel in the fifth inning to push Madeira's lead to 5-1. Barnhill added a two-run triple in the seventh inning.

“(Barnhill) has raised her batting average over 70 points in the last 10 games,” Schlensker said.

Madeira advances to the district championship Thursday at Kennedy Park.
