A guide to help make your day

Compiled by Jim Knippenberg

Going out

Jammin' acts: Jillian's will charge onto the scene and pick up a few acts left stranded by the suspension of Pepsi Jammin' on Main: Los Angeles-based hard rockers Buckcherry, multiplatinum pop stars Collective Soul and Sinomatic. Doors open at 7 p.m., music at 8 p.m. today, Jillian's, Covington. $15. (859) 491-5388.

Cincinnati Zoo: The Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden goes Aussie when it says g'day to its lush new Australian Walkabout, an exhibit full of wallabies (a small kangaroo-like animal), emus, fairy penguins and Survivor Rodger Bingham, who's not part of the exhibit but who will cut the ribbon. 11 a.m., today, Zoo, 3400 Vine St., Avondale. 281-4700.

Appalachian Festival: Cincinnati's rich Appalachian heritage goes front and center with mountain crafts, living history, a ton of bluegrass and down-home cooking just like Granny used to do. 10 a.m.-8 p.m. today, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday, Coney Island. $3-$6. 251-3378.

Arthur: Such a deal: Crafts for kids and somebody else cleans up the mess. It's Arthur's Birthday party with a new version of Arthur's Nose and a chance to make an Arthur or DW mask to take home and terrorize the neighbors. 10 a.m. today, Barnes & Noble Kenwood, 7800 Montgomery Road. 794-9440.

Staying In

TV picks: Dr. Quinn and Sully (Jane Seymour, Joe Lando) return to Boston for their daughter's graduation from medical school in CBS' reunion movie, Dr. Quinn: Winter's Heart (8 p.m., Channels 12, 7).

        • TV Critic John Kiesewetter also recommends a night of history and popcorn — a double feature of PT 109 (6 p.m., American Movie Classics)and Mel Gibson's The Patriot (9 p.m., HBO).

Planning Ahead

24 hours out: Widely acclaimed jazz pianist Fred Hersch tackles an afternoon full of virtuoso solo piano works that are way too difficult for most of us. 3 p.m. Sunday, Robert J. Werner Recital Hall, University of Cincinnati. $5-$10. 556-4183.

48 hours out: Best-selling author John Sandford discusses and signs Chosen Prey, his 13th Lucas Davenport thriller, this one about an especially demented serial killer. 7 p.m. Monday, Joseph-Beth Booksellers, Rookwood Pavilion, Norwood. 396-8960.

Next weekend: MainStrasse Village's Maifest kicks off the Tristate's lively summer festival season with German foods, live music, craft booths — they have some great concrete goose clothes — and more. Friday-May 20, Sixth and Main Streets, Covington. 357-6246.
