Klonne signs on at McNick

Ex-Moeller coach will be assistant

By Dave Schutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Steve Klonne, who recently resigned as Moeller High School's head football coach after 19 years, has accepted an assistant coaching position at McNicholas.

“It was a tough decision,” Klonne said. “My heart was with Purcell Marian, because I live in a parish that feeds the school.”

After resigning from Moeller two weeks ago, Klonne talked with McNicholas coach John Rodenberg and Purcell coach Tom Stickley about assistant coaching positions.

“McNicholas gave me a lot of years' credit for teaching, which was important (financially),” Klonne said. “John and I are good friends. We went to Northwestern University together last summer to learn about the shotgun offense.”

Klonne will work with McNicholas' offense.

“We expect Steve will bring the idea of winning and what it takes,” said Rodenberg, who has completed seven seasons at McNick.

“We're at the level where we've been successful in the league and made the play offs. Steve's teams have been in many big games, and hopefully his experience and know-how will put us over the top.”

Moeller officials asked Klonne, 55, to step down after the 2001 season. He agreed to stay on next season but later changed his mind and resigned. Tuesday, he declined to comment on his parting with the school, other than to say, “I told (principal) Dan Ledford today that I was leaving.”

Klonne said Hillsboro and Columbus St. Charles contacted him about becoming head coach, but he declined.

“I wanted to stay local,” he said.
