Rivers running high, but floods not expected

By Walt Schaefer
The Cincinnati Enquirer

The Ohio River and its two major Cincinnati-area tributaries — the Great Miami and Little Miami rivers — are running fast but are not expected to come near flood stage.

All are expected to recede by the end of the week.

“We don't expect any problem,” said David Kennedy, administrator of New Richmond, nestled along the Ohio River in Clermont County. “The river is running fast — a swift current — and there's a lot of junk out there, so we'll probably have to pick up driftwood and do a shoreline cleanup,” he said.

Dave Rupe, supervising engineer for the city of Cincinnati, said he does not expect the water level to come close to crossing Kellogg Avenue near River Downs, or El Dorado Avenue in the California neighborhood east of downtown — the city's lowest-lying street.

Sam McNeil, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Wilmington, said the Ohio River was at 42.9 feet at Cincinnati Monday afternoon and was expected to drop to 40.5 feet by 8 a.m. today . By Thursday it should fall to 35.5 feet. Flood stage is 52 feet.

The Little Miami River at Milford was at 8.3 feet Monday and was expected to rise today to 9.7 feet before dropping to 7.1 feet on Thursday. Flood stage is 16 feet.

The Great Miami at Hamilton was at 7 feet Monday and expected to fall to 6.2 feet today and 4.4 feet by Thursday. Flood stage is 18 feet.

A cold front passed through Cincinnati Monday, bringing showers and plunging temperatures. Today's high is expected to reach only the low 60s.

Daytime high temperatures were expected to drop into the upper 50s for the remainder of the work week. Scattered showers also are forecast through the week.
