Cincinnati girls track highlights

McNick's Hornschemeier wins district hurdles

Kendra Hornschemeier of McNicholas won the 300 hurdles to become the Cincinnati area's lone champion at the Division II district championship track meet at Welcome Stadium in Dayton. Earlier, she stumbled three hurdles from the finish line and fell from second to eighth place in the 100 hurdles.

“I am so disappointed with the 100 hurdles. I had a good start and I was in second, I just had to clear the last hurdles,” Hornschemeier said. “I had to change my lead leg to my right, which is weaker, and that's when I clipped the hurdle.”

Hornschemeier seemed unphased in the 300 intermediate hurdles. She quickly took the lead and finished strong for the victory.

“Falling in the first race gave me more motivation to win the 300,” Hornschemeier said.

Wyoming's girls 800-meter relay team qualified for state with a fourth-place finish.

Wyoming won the Division II state title last year but only Elizabeth Shelley returned from that team.

“It's fun to qualify to state when we basically have a whole new team. We have a lot of room for improvement,” Shelley said.

Sophomore Courtney Engel finished second in the 1,600 with a time of 5:13.

Taylor's Carrie Crofford also qualified to state with a fourth-place finish.

Purcell Marian's Carlina Flowers jumped 17-4 3/4 to finish second in the long jump. Flowers also qualified in the 400 relay along with Haven Eaves, Celina Williams and Tesha Williams.
