Mariemont loses regional semifinal
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Mariemont's nine senior players left the field with their heads down after their baseball season came to an end Friday with a 2-0 loss to Versailles at Hillsboro's Richard Shaffer Field in the Division III regional semifinals.
Versailles ousted Mariemont in 1996 in the regional finals on the same field.
We felt our strong suit coming in was our defense and hitting, Mariemont coach Jerry Summerville said. They shut our bats down tonight.
Versailles ace Josh Bruns limited the Warriors to three hits. Bruns also struck out eight batters.
The Tigers took the lead in the third. Matthew Curtis led off the inning with a single to center and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Craig Stammer. Two batters later, Curtis scored on a throwing error to second base on a stolen-base attempt.
Versailles meets Marion Pleasant at 1 p.m. today for the regional crown.
