Relays lead Middletown to regional title

Middletown, ranked No.5 in the Enquirer's final girls track and field area coaches poll, came out on top in the Division I regional championship Saturday at Dayton's Welcome Stadium, with the help of strong performances in the relays.
Middletown finished with 51 points, eight ahead of second-place Lakota East. Colerain, which finished the regular season with the No.1 poll ranking, finished third with 35 points, followed by Dayton Meadowdale (33) and Dayton Colonel White (29).
The Middies placed second in the 1,600 relay and third in the 400 and 800 meter relays but had no individual champions.
DOUBLE WINNER: Lakota East senior Lindsay Zinn posted two easy victories in distance events to advance to next weekend's state meet.
Zinn won the 1,600 in 5 minutes, 2.81 seconds and later won the 3,200 by nearly 200 meters in 10:48.68.
I expected a little more competition, but everyone did great today, she said. I am expecting more of a challenge next week.
100 HURDLES: Three local runners qualified for state in the 100-meter high hurdles. St.Ursula's Kirby Blackley finished second in 15.68, followed by Mason freshman LaAuna Sistrunk (third, 15.82) and Turpin's Christine Hendricks (fourth, 16.04).
Sistrunk had more than other runners to contend with.
My number flew off my hip and stuck to my face, Sistrunk said. I thought it was a big bug.
DISCUS: Aiken freshman Shanna Dickenson achieved an unexpected goal, winning the event with a throw of 135 feet, 5 inches.
I set a goal of reaching state, but I didn't think I would actually do it, Dickenson said. I'm satisfied with my throw today, but next year I want to break the regional record.
DOUBLE QUALIFIERS: Withrow's Stevonne Spivery, Walnut Hills' Erica White, Colerain's Alison Bedingfield and Wilmington's Desiree Jones each qualified in two events.
Spivery, a senior, pulled away from the field to win the 400 in 57.67 and finished fourth in the 200 in 26.24.
I wanted to break the record (of 58.7 in the 400) I set last year, but the wind on the turns were tough, Spivery said.
White won the 200 in 25.94 and was third in the 100 in 12.98. Bedingfield was fourth in the 1,600 (5:11.35) and 3,200 (11:18.91). Jones won the high jump with a leap of 5-4 and was second in the long jump (18-1).
