Jockey Ouzts 3 wins from 4,000

The Cincinnati Enquirer

Jockey Perry Ouzts, 46, moved within three wins of 4,000 victories Saturday at River Downs. Only 39 riders in history have reached the 4,000-win plateau.

Ouzts, from Rivervale, Ark., began riding at River Downs in 1973 as an 18-year-old leading apprentice. He learned under his cousin, newly elected Hall of Fame jockey Earlie Fires. “If you ever sat around and thought about it, you wouldn't do this job,” said Ouzts, recalling breaking bones from head to foot and almost losing an eye when kicked by a horse.

Ouzts, a Northern Kentucky resident, has won numerous riding titles at RD and Beulah Park. His mounts have earned $21.1 million from 31,772 races.
