TAYLOR MILL Bishop Brossart's boys track team has heard enough about rebuilding. The Mustangs are the defending Class A state champions, and they made themselves a contender again Saturday by winning the Region 4 meet at Scott High School with a 138-122 victory over Bellevue.
People were looking at us to rebuild, Brossart co-coach Greg Enxel said. Instead, we just reloaded.
Though Brossart lost nine seniors from last year's squad, its returnees stepped up when needed this year.Junior Paul Markus won the 800- and 1,600-meter races, finished third in the 3,200 and was part of the 3,200 relay team that finished second Thursday.
It's what I set out to do, I guess, Markus said.
Brossart's jumpers performed well, also. Sophomore Dave Schuchter finished second in the long jump with an effort of 18 feet, 2 inches. Junior Joe Seiter won the triple jump Thursday with a 41-5 1/2.
But it was Brossart's strength in middle-distance runners that won the region title for the team. Junior Tim Kaiser and Markus finished first and third in the 3,200; nobody placed in the top six for Bellevue.
The top two finishers in each event qualify for the state meet.
CLASS AA: Highlands defeated Mason County 117-102 for the Region 5 title. Senior Brent Grover won the discus, freshman Braylen Derrick won the 3,200, and sophomore Josh Jager won the 400-meter dash. The 400 and 1,600 relay teams also won.
CLASS AAA: Covington Catholic again dominated the local big schools. The Colonels won their eighth consecutive title, a 169-72 victory over Campbell County in Region 4.
CovCath coach Jim Johnson will complete a 31-year coaching career (27 seasons at Lloyd, four at CovCath) next week.
(This team is) so much younger than the three teams I've had before, Johnson said. This year we had four seniors. We have 16 freshmen and sophomores.
The Colonels started Saturday with a 78-26 lead over Scott. Sophomore Steve Hanson won the 400, and seniors Mike Applegate and Mike Albanese finished 1-2 in discus.
