Notre Dame cruises to first AAA crown

TAYLOR MILL Notre Dame won its first Class AAA regional title Saturday, 166-82 over Boone County at Scott High School.
But Notre Dame isn't a newcomer to Northern Kentucky track prowess; the Pandas finished second to Scott the previous two years. But last year was tough to take, because two sprinters were disqualified for false starts.
Junior Megan Janson was one of those disqualified. Saturday she made up for it by winning the 400-meter title and running the third leg on the winning 400 and 800 relay teams.
Janson said running the three races in a 45-minute span helped calm her nerves.
I didn't have time to prepare or time to think, Janson said.
Notre Dame junior Meghan Crowe won both the 1,600 and 3,200.
We practiced twice as hard this year as we did last year, Crowe said.
Boone County wouldn't have placed second in AAA without senior Christen Jones. She won four races the 100 and 200 dashes and the 100 and 300 hurdles.
Jones is the defending AAA 100 state champion, but she's focused on the 200, in which she finished second last year.
I'm determined to get it, Jones said. It's my favorite event.
CLASS A: The Brossart girls had an easy time winning the team title. The four-time defending state champions beat St. Henry 215-94.
Coach Dave Schuh said he can't help thinking about a fifth state title.
We're capable of it, Schuh said. You never know until you get there and compete.
Brossart began with a 41-23 lead after Thursday's first day and extended it to 111-63.
Junior Megan Uebel led the Mustangs. She won the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 4 inches, and the triple jump with one of 33-11.
I feel like I'm jumping well, Uebel said. I like the high jump. Sometimes I do better in triple jump. High jump's my favorite.
Brossart sophomore Tara Sanker was a pleasant surprise. She won the 400 in 1 minute, 2.33 seconds.
Beginning of the year, we didn't know what she'd do, Schuh said. She only had one year (of experience), and she's been hurt; her shins have bothered her.
Brossart junior Celia Dischar won her first 3,200 title, by nearly four seconds over Ludlow's Pam Gerken.
St. Henry's Julie Armstrong took the 100 hurdles in 15.5 and the 300 hurdles in 48.07.
CLASS AA: Newport was the highest Northern Kentucky finisher at Russell High School. The Wildcats were fourth behind Russell, Fleming County and Mason County.
Newport sophomore Valerie Raisor won the shot put with a throw of 35-10, and the Wildcats' 400 relay team of freshmen Pam Smith and Sheena Bohannon, senior Ashley Mills and sophomore Christina Jones took first in 51.5.
