Indian Hill wins team tennis title
Freshman McCarthy takes last match
The Cincinnati Enquirer
With the Division II state team tennis championship on the line, Indian Hill freshman Mike McCarthy rallied for a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Columbus Academy freshman Kortney Keith in the deciding match.
McCarthy's brother, Ryan, defeated Michael Good in singles and the Compton brothers, Brian and Mike, won in doubles to round out the 3-2 Indian Hill victory.
In the semifinals, Indian Hill defeated Lexington 3-0. The other two matches were stopped when the Braves took the insurmountable lead.
Michael was down 4-5 in the first set and came back to win, Indian Hill coach Adam Wolter said. I told him the match was on the line and he had to step it up two levels which he is capable of doing.
The team championship is Indian Hill's third. The Braves previously won in 1997 and 1998, all under Wolter.
McCarthy admitted being nervous when the players from both teams gathered around the court to watch the finish.
I've never played in a match with this much pressure, McCarthy said. At first I was nervous but then I got pumped up and started playing much better.
McCarthy qualified to the state tournament in singles but lost a first-round match on Friday to Jeremy Miller, a sophomore at Sandusky St. Mary's.
The results:
R. McCarthy (I) d. Good 6-2, 6-1; M. McCarthy (I) d. Keith 7-6, 6-3; Pealer (CA) d. Ward 6-0, 6-1; B. Compton-M. Compton d. Siddiqui-Patel 6-4, 6-4; Venkataraman-Hague d. Musekamp-McIntire 6-0, 6-4. Records: I 20-3.
DIVISION I: Sycamore lost to Toledo St. Francis 3-2 in the semifinals and defeated Canfield 3-0 for third place.
