Morning Memo
Hot tips and news to start your business day
Today's number: 70 - Percentage who support a ban on the use of hand-held cellphones while driving, while the same number said the opposite about bans on phones that leave a driver's hands free, an ABC News poll of 1,027 adults found.
Today's money tip: No type of investment income that you earn in an IRA is subject to current income tax. Taxation occurs when you withdraw funds from your IRA. At the time of withdrawal, the taxable portion of the IRA is treated as ordinary income. If you have a nondeductible IRA, you should have the same original value, which reduces the tax on the distribution. If you have a Roth IRA and meet certain qualifications, including a five-year holding period, you won't pay any tax on the future distributions.
Today's mover: Robert S. Atkinson has been appointed vice president at Wilks Insurance Agency Inc. Mr. Atkinson will head the West Chester sales office. He was senior regional field director for Cincinnati Insurance Co. He is a graduate of Miami University and the University of Cincinnati. He has 17 years of experience in the property and casualty insurance field.
Today's career advice: Workers facing dismissal should not be reluctant in pursuing a decent severance package. The career-counseling organization The Five O'Clock Club recommends dealing with each compensation issue separately. A severance package is made up of many items. These may include an actual cash settlement, career counseling help, benefits, office space and other items, depending on the industry and company. A seemingly large cash settlement, for example, may quickly be eaten up if you end up paying for outplacement help and benefits.
Today's company: Phillips Supply
CLEANING UP : This Queensgate company dates to 1947, when Charles Phillips began distributing janitorial and cleaning supplies. The business is managed by his daughter, Pam Rossmann, and is one of only three privately held firms in the Greater Cincinnati 100 run by a woman.
SWEEPING THE REGION: From its Cincinnati beginnings, Phillips Supply has expanded throughout the Tristate and has branches in Portsmouth, Ohio, and Charleston, W.Va. Customers are largely end-users of Phillips' products, and they number in the thousands. Phillips also provides training to customers' employees in how to use products.
FLOORS ARE TOPS: Floor finishes and cleaners are among Phillips' top-selling products. In addition to supplies, the company also sells cleaning equipment such as buffers, scrubbers, vacuums and the old standbys: brooms and mops.
