Day goes after 8,000th win Thursday at Churchill
By Jack Murray
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Hall of Fame jockey Pat Day returns to Churchill Downs Thursday in search of his 8,000th career victory after failing to reach the milestone Monday at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y.
Day, who is one win from the milestone, finished ninth aboard favorite Traditionally in the Metropolitan Mile, which was won by 55-1 shot Exciting Story. Churchill's all-time leading rider is scheduled to ride seven races Thursday, including the first three.
First post Thursday is 3 p.m.
Day is thankful just to be in the position to accomplish something that only Laffit Pincay and Bill Shoemaker have achieved.
As is true with the bulk of my career, I'm in awe of God's handiwork, Day said. I think that I'm tailor-made for this job. I think this is where God would have me to be. He's blessed me with tremendous talent and ability and the gift to ride and communicate with the horses.
River Downs rider Perry Ouzts of Northern Kentucky failed in his bid to get his 4,000th victory Monday at the Cincinnati track. He'll try again today.
