CovCath avenges loss to Highlands

The Cincinnati Enquirer

Senior Adam Kunkel remained undefeated this season, pitching Covington Catholic to a 6-0 victory over Highlands in a Ninth Regional baseball semifinal game at Ryle High School Wednesday.

The victory puts the Colonels in Saturday's championship game against the winner of today's semifinal game between Dixie Heights and Bellevue.

“We have a good rivalry with Highlands, and they beat us 8-7 during the season,” Colonels assistant coach Tom Eckerle said. “Pitching and defense were the keys for us today.”

The shutout didn't come easy for Kunkel (8-0), who worked his way out of two jams.

After Brett Hamblen led off the fourth inning with a triple for Highlands, Kunkel retired the next three batters.

The Bluebirds loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth, but the next batter hit into a double play.

The Colonels took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Kunkel hit a double and scored on a two-run single by Greg Durr. Elliot Brass drove in two more runs with a single in the second inning, giving CovCath a 4-0 lead.

The victory advanced Brossart into a semifinal game at 7 p.m. today against the winner of the Estill County/Nicholas County game.
