IHL demise expected today
Cyclones probably will join ECHL, report says
The American Hockey League, which includes the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks, will hold a news conference today in Springfield, Mass., to announce details of its expansion plan for the 2001-02 season.
According to Street & Smith's Sports Business Journal, six International League teams will join the AHL next season and the IHL will be shuttered down after 57 seasons.
The teams not adopted by the AHL will join a lower-level minor league or face extinction. Those teams include the Cincinnati Cyclones, Cleveland Lumberjacks, Detroit Vipers, Orlando Solar Bears and Kansas City Blades.
The Cyclones will probably join the East Coast Hockey League, according to a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel report late Sunday night.
