p7 MainStrasse offers 'goettafest,' art show

COVINGTON The MainStrasse Village Association is sponsoring two family events on June 23 the first Glier's Goettafest and the third annual Fifth Third Bank Summer Art Show.
The goettafest will be in Goebel Park, while the art show will be held on Sixth Street promenade. Both events are 11 a.m.-8 p.m.
The Glier's Goettafest will celebrate the unique regional dish that originated in northeastern Germany. Goetta omelets, goetta pizza, goetta sausage and goetta balls will be served. Winners of a goetta recipe contest will be announced, and there will be games, music and dancing.

Churches urged
to counter cruising

LOUISVILLE A Nation of Islam minister called on churches in western Louisville to sponsor a festival of gospel music and preaching over Derby weekend next year.
Minister Jerald Muhammad said the spiritual alternative is the answer to the traditional cruising and occasional lewd behavior along West Broadway.
For years community leaders have been debating what to do about the thousands of cars that drive up and down West Broadway over Derby weekend.
UK adds forest fire

LEXINGTON About 800 firefighters from across the state are expected to participate in the University of Kentucky's 72nd annual fire school.
A new course has been added to help firefighters protect property from forest fires as more people are building homes in wooded areas. The course will be taught June 4-6 at Lexington Community College.

Tornado hurts
homes, not people

LONDON, Ky. A tornado that struck downtown damaged 123 homes, 26 businesses and 30 cars, but caused no serious injuries, officials said.
The tornado hit this Laurel County town's main street about 6:14 p.m. Saturday. Damage has been estimated at $2 million.Only three people were treated, for minor injuries.
KSU settles suit
filed by former coach

FRANKFORT Regents of Kentucky State University on Monday voted to settle a suit by former football coach George Small.
The decision was made privately in an executive session, which the Kentucky Open Meetings Act permits for discussion of pending litigation.
President George Reid and regents Chairman William Wilson said terms would be disclosed once paperwork was completed by the board's private attorney.
Hatfield-McCoy feud

PIKEVILLE Three months after Coca-Cola released much-sought-after bottles with the stereotypical image of a hillbilly on the label, the soft drink giant has come out with a new commemorative for the Hatfields and McCoys, the infamous feuding families from Appalachia.
Joe Adams, sales center manager for Pikeville Coca-Cola, said the bottles showed up in stores over the weekend in the Pikeville market in preparation for the annual Hatfield-McCoy Reunion Festival that begins Thursday.
Coca-Cola donated $10,000 from the sales to hospitals supported by the Shriners in Lexington and Cincinnati.
