In Harm's Way by Doug Stanton (Henry Holt; $25; 333 pages). This is a riveting account of the worst naval disaster at sea in U.S. history the sinking by torpedo of the heavy cruiser U.S.S. Indianapolis in the South Pacific during the closing days of World War II. Close to 900 men died; nearly 300 on impact and almost 600 at sea. The story is told largely from the viewpoint of the crew.
