HAMILTON Emma Edmonds, the cross-dressing Civil War spy. General William Tecumseh Sherman. General George Armstrong Custer.
These and other legends of the Civil War will appear at the Ohio Chautauqua 2001, held in Hamilton, Sharonville and other southwestern Ohio communities this month.
It's entertainment as well as history, said Chautauqua spokeswoman Linda Miller. This the third year for the event and the first time it's being held in a major metropolitan area of the state.
Sponsored by the Ohio Humanities Council and the Ohio State University Humanities Institute, the event revives the popular Chautauqua tradition of traveling tent performances by scholars.
The original movement was big at the turn of the last century. The event will be June 14-17 at 12 locations in the region, including the Cincinnati Museum Center, Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County and the Seasongood Nature Center in Anderson Township.
A program, Buckeyes in the Civil War, will travel to six Ohio cities, including Sharonville. On June 14-17, the program will be held at Heritage Village in Sharon Woods Park.
Scholars will impersonate five Civil War-era characters including Sojourner Truth, a former slave and abolitionist who perform for 30 minutes and take questions for 30 minutes.
At Hamilton's Butler County Historical Society Museum, Jeremy Meier will perform in Will the Real George Custer Please Stand Up?
The free program starts at 2 p.m. June 16 in Ritchie Auditorium, adjacent to the museum at 327 N. Second St.
It's an opportunity to see history come alive, said Marge Brown of the Butler County Historical Society Museum. It's great for families.
At 1 p.m. that day, historian Tom Stander will discuss A History of the Grand Army of the Republic in Butler County. The GAR was a group of Civil War veterans. The group had two African-American posts in Butler County.
In addition, the museum's collection of artifacts of the 35th and 93rd Ohio Volunteer Infantries will be displayed in the exhibit area at the auditorium before and after the programs.
For times of specific programs and additional details, call the Heritage Village Museum at (513) 563-9484 and the Butler County Museum at 296-9930.
