Deputy Sheriff, wife shot to death

WEST POINT, Ky. — Hardin County Deputy Sheriff Billy Collins and his wife were shot to death across the street from their home Saturday, authorities said.

The shootings occurred about 5:30 p.m., authorities said.

Hardin County Deputy Sgt. Bob Baker was helping Mr. Collins install an air conditioner in some rental property just before the shooting, said Kentucky State Police detective Mark Haynes. Mr. Baker heard the shots and called 911, Mr. Haynes said.

Gregory Wright, 40, of West Point, allegedly fled the scene on a bicycle, but was arrested minutes after the shooting about nine blocks away by West Point police. He had a shotgun in his possession, Mr. Haynes said.

Police would not confirm a motive, but neighbors said Mr. Collins and Mr. Wright had been having a dispute over a property line. The rental property where Mr. Collins and Mr. Baker were installing the air conditioner was next to Mr. Wright's property, neighbors said.

The shootings occurred in Mr. Wright's back yard, police said.

Mr. Wright was charged with two counts of murder and taken to the Hardin County Detention Center, Mr. Haynes said.

The couple was pronounced dead at the scene, said Hardin County Sheriff Martha Thomas.

Mr. Collins, 48, had been a deputy sheriff since February 1985. His wife, Peggy, 51, worked as a special deputy.

The Collinses have two sons and a daughter, Mr. Thomas said.
