About Hebrew Union College
By Ben L. Kaufman
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Hebrew Union College, founded by Reform Jews in Cincinnati in 1875, is the oldest Jewish seminary in North America.
In 1950, HUC merged with a newer liberal seminary, the Jewish Institute of Religion in New York, and became HUC-JIR.
In Cincinnati, the heart of the institution and historic home of its presidents, it remains known simply as HUC with a campus on Clifton Avenue in Clifton.
It opened campuses in Los Angeles (1954) and Jerusalem (1963).
Today, HUC trains rabbis, cantors, educators and other Jewish communal professionals for Jews worldwide.
Its Ph.D. program prepares Jewish and non-Jewish scholars for universities and seminaries.
This year, HUC had 65 rabbinical students in Cincinnati, 72 in New York, 28 in Los Angeles, and 54 - some American - in Jerusalem.
Overall, in its many programs and four campuses, HUC has about 1,500 students.
Cincinnati remains its historic center, but its major museum is in Los Angeles and the provost and many administrators are in New York.
In Cincinnati, the campus houses rabbinical training, graduate programs, a major library and rare books collection, a museum, and the American Jewish Archives.
HUC in Cincinnati also is home to the Academy for Adult Interfaith Studies, which offers short courses to the public, a Center for the Study of Ethics and Contemporary Moral Problems, a Center for Holocaust and Humanity Education, and the HUC Archaeology Center.
