Diner's Journal

Main St. eateries want summer to be special

By Polly Campbell
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Munchin' on Main is a new campaign launched to encourage restaurant customers to return to the Main Street area of Over-the-Rhine.

The promotion is a collaboration between Planet Feedback, a dot.com company with offices on Main Street, and five restaurants.

Don Mechem at Planet Feedback.com was alarmed at the drop in business at neighborhood restaurants after the riots in April.

“We thought a targeted summer-long effort might be a stop-gap thing to help restaurants now,” he says.

Sonya McDonnell, owner of Kaldi's, says, “We want to encourage people to come up here for lunch and happy hour, remind them we're here, and then get them to come back. We realize that people who come up from, say, Sixth Street, don't have a lot of time. So we want these (food and drink) specials to be things that are quick.”

Planet Feedback is planning mass e-mails to downtown companies to let employees know what's for lunch in the area. Here's what the restaurants are offering:

Kaldi's, 1204 Main St., will offer an express lunch special daily (including drink) for $5.95. Specials will change daily.

Kaldi's also has adjusted its hours. It will close Sunday at 8 p.m. instead of midnight, and will no longer serve dinner on Monday, but will add live music that night.

BarrelHouse Brewing Co., 22 E. 12th St., has two specials for the summer. A pizza and a pint is a small pizza with a beer or soft drink for $7.95, offered until 9 p.m. There's also an express lunch daily for $6.95 (with beverage). It might be a salmon Caesar salad or a chicken foccaccia sandwich. In addition, happy hour has been extended until 9 p.m. daily.

The Diner on Sycamore, 1203 Sycamore St., is offering six lunch specials, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday. They include a burrito, chicken pot pie, grilled steak salad, andouille sausage hoagie and Mexican lasagne. Price: $5.25 (with beverage).

Nicola's Ristorante, 1420 Sycamore St., will have a lunch express special during the week, usually $8.95 (with beverage). It might be homemade lasagne or a caprese sandwich. Lunch hours: 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday-Friday.

The Courtyard Cafe, 1211 Main St., has a special every day, and it's throwing in a beverage for $6.75. For example, Thursday's special always is meatloaf, mashed potatoes and gravy and green beans.
