A Cincinnati lawyer was indicted Wednesday on charges of attempting to obtain OxyContin pills using fake prescriptions.

        A Hamilton County grand jury indicted Robert Bruce Selnick, 41, an attorney with offices at Fourth and Walnut streets downtown, on two counts of illegal processing of drug documents.

        Officials say Mr. Selnick obtained a legal prescription for 14 40-milligram pills of the painkiller, made copies of the prescription and tried to get more pills this month using fake prescriptions at five pharmacies.

        Officials said they think he intended to use the pills himself.

        Neither Mr. Selnick nor his attorney could be reached for comment Wednesday.

        In Greater Cincinnati, police say, OxyContin has become the drug of choice for pharmaceutical abusers, making an unprecedented leap in popularity. “This touches all walks of life,” said Cincinnati Police Sgt. Kerry Rowland, who heads the Pharmaceutical Diversion Unit.

        Since it appeared on the illicit market more than a year ago, Tristate police have confiscated more than 13,000 doses of OxyContin.

        Abusers often grind and snort it, or it's injected.

        Each of the charges Mr. Selnick faces is a felony. If he is convicted the two charges, served consecutively, could land him in prison for up to three years.
