Cincinnati police officers soon will start getting short refresher courses every day before they go to work.

        For six minutes at the beginning of every roll call, supervisors will review training subjects such as vehicle pursuits and use of force, said Lt. Col. Ron Twitty. The new program starts July 1.

        “The way we look at it is six minutes a day is another 30 minutes a week and two hours a month,” he said. “If we do it every day it becomes part of the routine.”

        The daily short courses will be in addition to 24 hours of mandatory training officers already must complete yearly. Officials also will standardize the trainings across the division's five districts. Now, he said, each district's training officer might schedule sessions about three times a week on whatever issue they choose.

        How the Cincinnati Police Division trains its officers is among the things federal civil-rights lawyers intend to examine during their investigation of the department. The lawyers return for more work and interviews next week.

        But Lt. Col. Twitty said the new training plan has been in the works for months. Topics for July and August already are set, he said.

        Cincinnati modified the idea from the Ohio State Highway Patrol. State troopers get brief in-service training at a roll call every month and take quizzes on it, said spokesman Lt. Gary Lewis.

        “We're ensuring that the knowledge is there and in place,” he said. “That's very important.”
