Colerain considers its future

Coming plan will detail growth for next 20 years

By Sue Kiesewetter
Enquirer Contributor

COLERAIN TWP. — Hamilton County's largest community outside Cincinnati is looking for a plan to guide its growth over the coming decades.

Soon, a five-member committee will be named to shape a comprehensive master plan for this township of 60,000-plus people — the largest in the state. The township has its own zoning board and land-use planners.

“By focusing on our strengths, we can make this uniquely Colerain,” said Manning Baxter, the township's land-use planner. “I think we want to encourage moderate growth while preserving green space. I think we want a village-like atmosphere where you don't have to drive so far for jobs or recreation.”

Committee members will study existing land-use plans to see if any modifications are needed if there are conflicts between existing uses and zoning of adjacent lots or open spaces. The group also will look at Colerain Avenue, the township's main artery and commercial district, to see how to improve traffic flow and appearance.

“This comprehensive plan is an attempt to make a great plan of what we'd like the township to look like in 20 years,” Trustee Keith Corman said. “We'd be taking a little more control of our destiny. What we're doing here is designing the Colerain of the future.”

Trustee Joseph Wolterman said a true community effortwould require the initial five appointees to form ad hoc committees to work on specific topics. Other community members then would be able to give insight.

“I think it's an important step we're taking,” Mr. Wolterman said. “(Forming) ad hoc committees would involve more people.”

Anyone interested in volunteering for the steering committee should send a letter of interest to Mr. Baxter, 4200 Springdale Road, Colerain Township, OH 45251-1419.
