Where to donate fans, etc.




        A number of Tristate social service agencies are accepting donations of fans, air conditioners or tax-deductible contributions to pay for cooling appliances or utility bills. They include:

        • Be Concerned: Donations to help buy fans for low-income residents of Kenton, Campbell and Boone counties can be mailed to Be Concerned, 714 Washington St., Covington 41011. Information: Kim Frances, assistant director, or Mary Jennings, director, at (859) 291-6789.

        • Brighton Center: Donations of new fans or older fans that meet federal safety guidelines can be made to Northern Kentucky's largest social service agency. Fans can be dropped off at Brighton Center's administrative offices, 741 Central Ave., Newport. Donations can be mailed to Brighton Center, P.O. Box 325, Newport 41072. Information: (859) 491-8303.

        • Cincinnati-Hamilton County Community Action Agency: The agency, which serves senior citizens on fixed incomes, people with disabilities and the working poor, accepts donations of new fans and air conditioners, as well as monetary contributions for either. Donations can be sent to Cincinnati-Hamilton County Community Action Agency, 2904 Woodburn Ave., Cincinnati 45206. Information: Herbert Walker, manager of emergency services, at (513) 569-1840, Ext. 30.

        • Franciscan at St. John social service center: This Over-the-Rhine agency gives out new fans and air conditioners and accepts monetary donations for either. Send checks to the agency at P.O. Box 14368, Cincinnati 45250. Mark on the check that the money is for fans or air conditioners. Information: (513) 241-2186.

        • FreeStore FoodBank: Another Over-the-Rhine agency that accepts new fans or air conditioners and contributions to purchase either. Information: (513) 241-1064.

        • Support to Encourage Low Income Families: serves clients in Butler County. Donations to help pay for air conditioners can be sent to SELF, 222 High St., Suite 400, Hamilton45011, or SELF's Middletown office at 1711 S. University Blvd., Middletown 45044. The HEAP program aids residents with a family member who suffers from a respiratory illness. Information: (513) 868-9300.

        • Senior Services of Northern Kentucky: Donations can be mailed to SSNK-fans, 1032 Madison Ave., Covington 41011. To drop off a new fan, call (859) 491-0522 for locations.
