Area students awarded GE grants

28 locals among 251 nationally to win STAR

By Walt Schaefer
The Cincinnati Enquirer

EVENDALE — Children of 28 employees of General Electric Aircraft Engines were among 251 students of GE parents nationwide who received college scholarships from the GE Fund this year.

The local recipients were recognized and presented scholarships Friday during ceremonies at GE Aircraft Engines' Jet Propulsion Museum. In all, $86,000 in scholarships and grants will be awarded.

Students, schools get cash

        GE spokeswoman Paula Kollstedt said:

        • 26 students received $2,500 scholarships under the GE Fund's Student and Teacher Achievement and Recognition program.

        • One student received a special $2,000 Engineering Student Grant.

        • One student received both awards.

The programs also earmark $500 grants to the students' high schools and the students receive the honor of selecting a teacher to designate how the grants will be spent by the schools.

“This is an impressive achievement for Greater Cincinnati,” said Marc Chini, GE Aircraft Engines' vice president of human resources. “We applaud these students for their outstanding high school accomplishments and wish them continued success.”

The GE Fund established the STAR program in 1984 to provide scholarships to high-achieving children of GE employees and retirees. The recipients this year were selected from about 1,500 applicants.

Recipients are chosen based on academic record, extracurricular activities and a written statement of goals and aspirations.

The GE Fund, the philanthropic foundation of GE, invests in improving educational quality and access and in strengthening community organizations.

Suruchi Prakash of Indian Hill High School was awarded both a $2,500 STAR scholarship and a $2,000 engineering grant, and the school received $1,000.
