Group seeks list of donors
Some want names disclosed
The Associated Press
LOUISVILLE A group of Democratic state lawmakers from Jefferson County wants the University of Louisville to disclose the list of donors to the McConnell Center for Political Leadership.
Reps. Mary Lou Marzian and Jim Wayne, of Louisville, said the center received $1 million from the state's Bucks for Brains program to endow its director's position.
We are the ones carrying the water for UofL in the House, and we want this done, Mr. Wayne said. We want the names released.
The center is founded by Republican U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell.
Ms. Marzian and Mr. Wayne said Rep. Joni Jenkins, D-Shively, joined them in telling university President John Shumaker to disclose the names, which have remained undisclosed by the university and the senator.
Mr. Wayne said the legislators expressed concern about how the UofL controversy would affect Bucks for Brains, which since 1997 has made available $230 million in state money to match private donations, primarily for research.
Mr. Wayne said he discussed legislation with House Speaker Pro Tem Larry Clark, D-Okolona, that would require identifying the donors of all money that is matched by the state.
Univeristy Spokeswoman Rae Goldsmith said the university will continue to keep the names of the donors confidential.
Mr. McConnell founded the center in 1991 with $3 million he raised in private donations, and he subsequently raised $1 million that was matched by the state.
The Courier-Journal has sued the University of Louisville Foundation, which handles donations to the university, to make the list of donors to the McConnell Center public.
