Chicago may be the Hog Butcher for the World, but this weekend Cincinnati is giving the Illinois city some competition. The Porkopolis BBQ Festival, a spread of barbecued food and live music, is being held this weekend at Sawyer Point.
Coldiron Concessions and the Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce are sponsoring the event.
Pork goes back to Cincinnati's heritage, said Marc Wertheim, president of Coldiron Concessions.
A hundred-pound pig is roasted each day, which takes about nine hours, said Chip Smith, a spokesman for Coldiron.
Besides pork, festival goers can munch on chicken, hamburgers, funnel cake and other delights.
Saturday's brief downpour didn't deter visitors.
Steve and Amy Miller of Springboro, Ohio were in Cincinnati for their anniversary and decided to stop by.
We saw a flyer for it in our hotel, Mrs. Miller said.
Organizers plan to make Porkopolis an annual event, said Todd Bucher, senior event manager of the Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce.
The free festival continues from noon-8:30 p.m. today. Entertainment includes country music acts Jericho, the Danny Frazier Band, Todd Henry and The Kinleys.
