Indiana All-Stars exact revenge on Kentucky


Boys win 107-91; girls triumph 80-65

        INDIANAPOLIS — Chris Thomas scored 26 points to lead fast-starting Indiana to a 107-91 victory over Kentucky in Saturday's Indiana-Kentucky All-Star game.

        Thomas, Indiana's Mr. Basketball from Indianapolis Pike, hit seven of 16 field goals and all eight of his free throws as Indiana gained a split of this year's two-game series. Thomas hit four of eight 3-pointers.

        Ronny Dawn of Newport Central Catholic had four points for Kentucky. Patrick Sparks of Muhlenberg North hit five of seven 3-point baskets to lead Kentucky with 25 points. Larry O'Bannon of Louisville Male added 20 points. They were the only Kentucky players in double figures. Michael Haney of Madisonville-North Hopkins led all rebounders with 12.

        Kentucky made 26 of 65 field goals. Indiana made 32 of 78.

        Thomas scored eight points and Chris Hill five, and Indiana forced eight turnovers in the game's first five minutes as it ran to a 19-4 lead.

        Kentucky trimmed the deficit to 45-42 with 2:31 remaining in the half as Dawn hit a 3-pointer to cap a 13-6 run.

        But Indiana, which hit seven of 18 3-pointers before intermission, used long-range baskets by Brandon McKnight and Sean Kline to pull away.

Girls

        Shyra Ely scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Indiana to an 80-65 win.

        Kentucky Miss Basketball Katie Schwegmann of Bishop Brossart didn't play because of a sore knee.

        Ely, a 6-2 senior from Indianapolis Ben Davis who is Indiana's Miss Basketball, hit eight of 14 field goals, including one 3-pointer, and six of seven free throws.

        Ashley Allen of Ben Davis scored 10 points, Jenny DeMuth of Highland added nine and Miranda Eckerle of Franklin County scored eight as Indiana gained a split of the two-game series.

        Indiana, outrebounded 51-45 by Kentucky a week earlier, held a 55-36 edge Saturday.

        Brandi Miller of LaGrange Oldham County hit just 2-of-12 field goals but sank 10-of-14 free throws to lead Kentucky with 14 points.

        Chelsey Thompson of DuPont Manual added 13, and Dana Crittenden of Shelby County and Nare Diawara of Louisville Moore scored eight each.

        Diawara hit two baskets as Kentucky scored nine of the game's first 11 points, but Ely hit a three-pointer, an 18-footer, a tip-in and a free throw to fuel a 21-6 run by Indiana over the next 7:32. Ely's tip capped the surge, giving Indiana a 23-15 lead 9:40 before the half.

        DeMuth scored eight of Indiana's last nine points of the half, including a 3-pointer from just inside the half-court line at the buzzer to give her team a 48-33 lead.

        KENTUCKY (65): Dana Crittenden 4-11, 0-1 8, Brandi Miller 2-12 20-14 14, Nare Diawara 3-5 2-2 8, Neely Thomas 1-4 2-2 5, Chelsey Thompson 5-9 0-0 13, Chandra Brown 1-1 1-2 3, Kiki Radford 1-2 0-1 2, Joleen Phillips 1-10 0-2 3, Aya Traore 2-4 0-0 4, Princess Wimsatt 2-3 0-0 5.
